Swedish and Turkey in ‘genocide’ row !

>> петък, 12 март 2010 г.

Turkey has cancelled a planned summit with Sweden after its parliament endorsed the term genocide over the killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks during World War One. Turkey has also recalled its ambassador.

Sweden, however, appears firm in its decision. Hans Linde, member of the Left Party said:
“If the victims are not acknowledged, and have their sufferings proved true, this trauma may go on for generations.”

Unsurprisingly, Turkey has spoken out against the Swedish Parliament’s decision, with President Abdullah Gül expressing his disappointment.

“The people who have voted are not historians or scientists…they are people who are just acting with low-level motivations. The lack of respect they are showing for history makes me sad,” he said.

Turkey refuses to describe the killing of the Armenians ‘genocide’. It is the second time in less than a week this issue has arisen, after a US congressional panel also endorsed the term genocide.
