Turkey's Sibel Ozkan won silver medal in women's 48 kg weightlifting at the Olympic Games, which started in Beijing, China on Friday. Ozkan won the silver medal in the 88 kg in the snatch and a successful 111 kg in the clean and jerk for a 199 kg total.
--HURRIYET'S FREEDOM TRAIN IN SAKARYA
Hurriyet's Human Rights Train, which set off to voice equality, freedom and what should be done to curb domestic violence, arrived at the northwestern province of Sakarya, which had been hit by a devastating earthquake in 1999. Governor Huseyin Atak and Mayor Aziz Duran welcomed the train.

Justice and Development Party (AKP) Deputy Chairwoman Edibe Sozen has withdrawn a draft law which she said would aim at protecting young people after it caused disputes. The draft law would propose opening prayer rooms in schools and new rules on the sale of pornographic material.

Turkey's Parliament Speaker Koksal Toptan called for peace and temperance in regard to clashes between Georgians and South Ossetians. Toptan said, "Any instability in Georgia causes uneasiness in Turkey. Our foreign minister and prime minister expressed our concerns to the parties and called for temperance on Friday. Every development in Caucasus concerns Turkey."

--FORMER RULING PARTY FIGURE PUBLISHES BOOK, TELLS HOW HE PARTED WAYS WITH AKP
Former deputy and cabinet member from the ruling AKP Abdullatif Sener has written a book in which he told how he decided to quit the party as he prepares to establish a new political party.
"You are thinking differently with the prime minister in economy, your political styles, your statesmanship are different. And the most important thing you see that you are in the middle of a political power that is not 100 percent free of corruption. This is not an environment which would make you feel happy and encourage you to do your job," Sener tells in his book, "My Name Has Also Grown Along the Way with Me."
--"CLOSING US DOWN WOULD NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM," SAYS DTP HEAD
Leader of the Democratic Society Party (DTP), which faces being banned in a closure case, said that closing the party would not "solve the problem." "If the DTP is not closed down, then we can say Turkey has entered a genuine path of democratic change and transformation. But if we are closed down, then it would just mean that the ruling AKP had reached a compromise with the state or certain circles," Ahmet Turk said.

--CARGILL PENALTY TO ERDOGAN
Turkey's High Court of Appeals made a very important decision. The high court ruled to fine Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan for not complying with a court order in the construction of a factory for the U.S. company Cargill in Gemlik town. The court said Erdogan, former minister Zeki Ergezen and Gemlik mayor Mehmet Turgut are responsible for not complying with the court order.

The war in the Caucasus continues, cities have been burnt down and many people lost their relatives. Georgia launched a major offensive Friday to retake control of South Ossetia. Russia, which has close ties to the province, responded by sending in armed convoys and military combat aircraft.
The death toll in Tshinvali reached 1,600. Meanwhile Turkey has been taking precautions against a migrant wave.

--TURKEY'S ARCELIK BOOSTS NET PROFIT UP BY 25 PCT IN H1
Turkish household appliance maker Arcelik's posted 135 million YTL ($113 million) net profit for the first half of 2008, which marked a 25.5 percent increase.
The company also boosted its international turnover to some 871 million euros.
